All-Star Football Team
There are many familiar names from 1965 that athletes today recognize. Long-time Lahainaluna football coach Lanny Tihada was actually teammates with Gilbert Silva, who later became a long-time coach at Maui High.
The star of the season, however, was Hilo's Robert Ahu, who averaged 176.1 yards per game over that 8-game season. He finished with 1,173 yards passing, completing 76 of 165 pass attempts. Apparently Ahu was a one-man show as no other Viking players were chosen to the team and Ahu was the only underclassman — a sophomore in fact.
You will notice that Norman Keahi of Lahainaluna led the league in rushing and scoring, but was noticeably missing from the all-star team. Former Maui High football coach Curtis Lee was the runner-up in both categories.
